Beach Access
The outer shore of North Beach is open to beach use by the
public. Access is via ORV (permit required) or by boat.
North Beach Island is open to beachgoers by boat only.
There are several local
water taxi services.
South Beach is owned by the town of Chatham and open to the
public. It can be accessed from Lighthouse Beach.
Shorebird Nesting
Terns, plovers and other shorebirds generally begin to
arrive on North Beach, North Beach Island, South Beach and
Monomoy about April 1. Once the birds nest, areas are
general closed to both vehicles and pedestrians to prevent
disturbance. For information about vehicle closures due to
nesting shorebirds, visit the Orleans park and beach department
website or the
town of Chatham website. Mass Audubon's
coastal waterbird program
provides information about nesting
shorebirds. The
Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge
connects
to South Beach at the tip of North Monomoy. Access to the refuge
is restricted during shorebird nesting season.
